The suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been formally charged with second-degree murder after a fatal shooting outside a New York City hotel last Wednesday. 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with multiple offenses including firearm possession and identity fraud. After his arrest, it was revealed that Mangione would face charges in New York for the killing of Thompson.
Thompson, 50, was shot early in the morning on December 4 while on his way to an investor conference at the New York Hilton Midtown. Surveillance footage captured a masked gunman approaching Thompson from behind and shooting him in the back and leg. Thompson was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West Hospital. Although Thompson had received threats prior to the incident, his wife confirmed he had not altered his travel plans and was without a security detail at the time of the shooting.
Mangione’s attorney, Thomas Dickey, maintains that there is no direct evidence connecting his client to the murder, particularly regarding the firearm found on him during his arrest. While police are investigating whether the gun recovered in Pennsylvania matches the one used in the crime, Dickey argues that many guns appear similar and that there is no concrete proof linking it to Thompson's killing. Mangione is also challenging his extradition to New York, asserting his constitutional rights. The case is ongoing, with law enforcement continuing to review evidence, including ballistic tests on the weapon.
